Bulgaria Nabs Human Trafficking Gang

09/09/2011 – The Balkan countries have an egregious record as a corridor and destination for human trafficking, and Bulgarian authorities have just arrested a gang accused of trafficking Bulgarian women to Italian resorts to work as prostitutes, Balkan Insight reports. The accused are also involved in money laundering, according to Bulgaria’s Interior Ministry.

The Bulgarian gang used a ruse common among traffickers, both in and outside the region, to trick its victims. Promising seasonal work abroad, the gang stole the women’s travel documents once they reached Italy and forced them to work as prostitutes while charging 100 euros a day for “protection,” according to the report.
